Extreme Heat & Climate Change -What Do We Know? Extreme heat brought on by rising global temperatures from climate change is creating deadly conditions. Americares is at work on the frontlines of this health crisis. Extreme heat (temperatures that are 10 degrees Fahrenheit or more above normal) kills nearly twice as many Americans each year as tornadoes and almost three times more than hurricanes. Extreme heat is particularly deadly for the elderly, young children, people with underlying health conditions and people in disadvantaged communities—in the United States and around the world. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, 2024 was the hottest year since records began in 1850. The planet’s 10 warmest years since 1850 have all occurred in the past decade. We are preparing our clinic partners in the United States and around the world with health information about the increasing dangers of extreme heat and how to provide critical services to their most vulnerable patients in a heat crisis.
