Typhoon Kalmaegi (Tino)

Americares is responding to Typhoon Kalmaegi (known locally as Tino), which struck the Philippines Nov. 4 with sustained winds of 75 mph. The storm made landfall on the Philippines’ northern islands, which are still recovering from recent earthquakes and typhoons. The storm’s destructive winds destroyed homes and torrential rains triggered widespread floods. Local news outlets are reporting the death toll has already exceeded 150 and is expected to climb as search and rescue efforts continue, much of that centered in Cebu. As many as 560,000 people have been displaced by Kalmaegi, and Typhoon Fung-wong (locally Uwan) is expected to impact the Philippines just days after Kalmaegi’s landfall. Americares Philippines is deploying an emergency response team to distribute critical supplies, including medicine, hygiene kits and other supplies for safe water and sanitation. The team also expects to reach 500 storm survivors with hygiene promotion and health education sessions.
